The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) has released its exam pass rates for 2025. In this article, we examine the latest figures, compare them to previous years, and highlight what these trends might mean for candidates planning their qualification route.
The pass rates are correct as at 19 June 2026.
Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning
| Unit | Annual Pass Rate 2020 | Annual Pass Rate 2021 | Annual Pass Rate 2022 | Annual Pass Rate 2023 | Annual Pass Rate 2024 | Annual Pass Rate 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| R01 | 69% | 69% | 68% | 69.6% | 70.1% | 72.82% |
| R02 | 64% | 65% | 70% | 63.8% | 65.2% | 69.67% |
| R03 | 65% | 57% | 54% | 55.4% | 60.1% | 59.61% |
| R04 | 61% | 57% | 57% | 65.9% | 66.2% | 70.15% |
| R05 | 79% | 78% | 78% | 76.6% | 77.7% | 80.53% |
| R06 | 78% | 74% | 71% | 74.8% | 71.3% | 71.34% |
The 2026 pass rates for the multiple-choice units generally follow the trend seen in recent years. R03 remains the most challenging exam, while R05 continues to achieve the highest pass rate. This is unsurprising, given that R05 is a Level 3 unit, whereas the other units are assessed at Level 4.
These pass-rate trends reinforce our view that candidates beginning the Diploma qualification should start with R05, followed by R01. This approach enables candidates to become familiar with the CII exam format, question structure, online assessment system, and time management requirements before progressing to the more technically demanding units: R02, R03, and R04.
R06 pass rates remain consistently just above 70% despite it being a tricky exam and the first CII written exam that many candidates will have faced (R01 to R05 are all multiple choice). The pass rate does demonstrate that with some hard work and the support of exam specific training material, it is very passable!
Other Diploma Level Units

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| J02 | 67% | 58% | 59% | 63.1% | 61.5% | 56.12% |
| J05 | 88% | 88% | 92% | 88.4% | 90.1% | 92.77% |
| J07 | 76% | 68% | 63% | 73.1% | 69.3% | 77.42% |
| J09 | 76.8% | 78.6% | 79% | 78.5% | 81.2% | 82.6% |

| R07 | 76% | 74% | 75% | 81.8% | 75% | 66.67% |
Among the Level 4 diploma units, J05 (Pension Income Options) and J10 (Discretionary Investment Management) continue to post strong results. While there’s no clear reason why these two exams consistently outperform others, the statistics suggest they may be more straightforward for candidates.
In contrast, J02 (Trusts) remains a much tougher challenge, with a pass rate of just 56.12% in 2025.

Advanced Diploma Units
Coursework-based assessments continue to impress. AF6 (Senior Management and Supervision) achieved the highest pass rate overall at 97.4%, while AF8 (Retirement Income Planning) also had high pass rates of 83.9%.
AF7 pass rates are still hovering around the 50% mark, with only AF1 consistently lower. AF1 continues to be the exam candidates struggle with the most, with pass rates once again sitting in the mid-forties.
With 120 units required at level 6 for the Advanced Diploma. Candidates may want to consider these pass rates carefully as AF7 and AF1 can be avoided to improve their odds of success.
| Unit | Annual Pass Rate 2020 | Annual Pass Rate 2021 | Annual Pass Rate 2022 | Annual Pass Rate 2023 | Annual Pass Rate 2024 | Annual Pass Rate 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AF1 | 49% | 43% | 42% | 50.2% | 43.1% | 45.92% |
| AF4 | 55% | 50% | 57% | 53.3% | 55.2% | 60.26% |
| AF5 | 72% | 63% | 72% | 78.2% | 82.5% | 75.71% |
| AF6 | 98.8% | 97% | 97% | 95.5% | 96.6% | 97.4% |
| AF7 | 43% | 56% | 61% | 50.6% | 60.8% | 53.66% |
| AF8 | 71.5% | 75.3% | 75% | 79.9% | 83.3% | 83.9% |
Summary
The units with consistently lower pass rates include R03, J02, AF1, AF4, and AF7 – suggesting these may require extra preparation and support. On the other hand, coursework-based assessments (AF6 and AF8) continue to produce excellent results, which may appeal to candidates who prefer written assignments over timed exams.
Pass rates can be a useful guide when deciding which units to take and in what order, so it’s worth taking some time to review them when planning your route to the Diploma or Advanced Diploma.
