Why Do We Put Ourselves Through Professional Exams?

Anyone who has ever studied for professional exams knows it’s not easy. Juggling revision with a full-time job often means evenings with the books instead of family, and weekends that vanish into practice papers. With all that sacrifice, it’s worth asking: why do we actually do it? Read on to find out what drives people to take on the challenge – and why the rewards go far beyond the qualification itself.

This article is correct as at 11 November 2025.

To dig a little deeper, I ran a LinkedIn poll asking:

“What’s your main reason for sitting CII or other professional development exams?”

Here’s what people said:

  • 88% – Career progression
  • 13% – Employer requirement
  • 0% – Personal achievement
  • 0% – To boost confidence

Career Progression Leads the Way

The overwhelming majority see exams as a route to the next step in their career. That makes sense – qualifications can open doors to promotions, higher pay, and new opportunities. For financial advisers and planners, exams are also a signal to clients that you’re knowledgeable, up to date, and serious about doing the job well.

Employer Requirements: The Starting Point

For some, exams begin as a necessity. An employer might say, “you need to pass this to take on the role.” But interestingly, that’s rarely where the story ends. What starts as a requirement often sparks something more – the realisation that you can do it, and the motivation to keep pushing forward.

What About Confidence and Personal Achievement?

One thing that surprised me is that nobody in the poll picked personal achievement or boosting confidence as their main reason. And yet, for many people, those are some of the most rewarding outcomes.

Passing an exam after weeks/months of hard work is a huge confidence boost. It shows resilience, commitment, and belief in your own ability – qualities that matter just as much as the technical knowledge you gain. Even if “career progression” is the headline reason, the personal pride you feel when you get that pass mark is something to celebrate.

The Bigger Picture

Professional exams aren’t easy – but that’s why they’re so valuable. They help you progress in your career, meet employer expectations, and prove to yourself that you’re capable of more than you might have thought.

So next time you’re staring at your revision notes, remember: you’re not just working for a certificate. You’re investing in your career, building confidence, and achieving something you’ll always be able to look back on with pride.
