When Do Most Candidates Really Start Revising for Their CII Exams?

Everyone revises differently, but when do CII candidates really start preparing for their exams? We asked this question in a recent LinkedIn poll, and the answers tell an interesting story.
This article is correct as at 10 February 2026.
Everyone has their own approach to revision. Some people thrive under pressure and prefer an intense burst of study just before the exam, while others build their confidence steadily over time.
We recently ran a LinkedIn poll asking when candidates preparing for CII and other professional exams actually begin revising – and the results were revealing:
- 1-2 weeks before: 17%
- 4-6 weeks before: 25%
- 6-8 weeks before: 33%
- 8+ weeks before: 25%
So while there’s still a small group of last-minute crammers, the majority of candidates now start their revision at least a month before the exam, with a third beginning six to eight weeks out. This shows that many learners are recognising the benefits of planning early and adopting a more structured, sustainable approach to studying.
The Benefits of a Longer-Term Study Plan
Starting early gives you the breathing space to plan and pace your revision properly. When you’re not racing the clock, you can divide topics into manageable chunks and build in time for review and testing. Regular revision cycles are proven to strengthen long-term memory, particularly when combined with active recall and practice questions – two of the most effective techniques for professional qualification exams.
It also has a huge impact on stress levels. Instead of that last-minute panic, you enter the final week feeling calm and prepared. You know what you’ve covered and where your strengths lie, which is a far better mindset for exam success.
Longer preparation also helps those juggling study alongside work and family life. When your plan spans several weeks, there’s room for real-world interruptions without everything derailing. You can miss a day and still stay on track!
Why Structure Matters
A good revision plan is like a roadmap. It tells you what to focus on, when to move on, and how to measure progress. Without one, it’s easy to lose time revisiting the same topics or leaving the tricky areas until it’s too late.
Even if you only have a few weeks left, consistency is key. A focused 30-minute session each day will take you further than an unfocused weekend of cramming. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s steady, confident progress.
At Brand Financial Training, we see this every exam cycle: candidates who start early, plan realistically, and stick to a structured routine go into their exams calmer, more confident, and far more likely to succeed.
