Our Top Revision Tips for the CII R0 Exams
There is a lot of information to retain, and a lot of studying required for the R0 multiple-choice question exams, so we wanted to share with you some top tips to help with your revision.
How to Pass Guides
At Brand Financial Training, we have been helping candidates pass their R0 exams for many years and we have now summarised our knowledge and experience in our ‘How to Pass’ guides. We recommend that anyone about to take an R0 exam read the relevant guide as it provides an overview of the exam, help with exam technique, examples of some of the most common exam questions, and help on how to approach the difficult multi-response questions. This is a completely free guide for all our customers. Get yours here.
Mock papers are not just practice questions!
Spend time practising mock papers, not just questions that test your knowledge. Mock papers are designed to replicate the actual exam, and therefore, will prepare you for the style and format of the exam as well as testing your knowledge. For example, the R01 to R04 exams include multi-response questions, which can be particularly challenging. Also, the CII is moving towards ‘client scenario’ style questions, which can be trickier and more time-consuming, so practice is key to ensure you understand the precise meaning of the question. We would also advise doing at least one mock paper under exam conditions, as this will give you a feel for timings.
Study the CII Exam Guides
Take the time to read the CII exam guide. It includes full details of the exam structure, exam technique information, a full mock exam, and details of the learning objectives, including how many questions are likely to be asked for each.

Focus your learning
If you find yourself short of study time or you are finding the study text hard going, you may choose to focus your learning. You could identify areas of weakness in your knowledge then focus your in-depth revision on these areas. There are areas of the syllabus that are more heavily examined than others, particularly in R01 and R02 where four chapters cover around 50% of the questions. Full details of the number of questions in each chapter are detailed in the exam guide and study text, so again, do take the time to look at this.
Exam Resources
There is a range of exam resources to help with your revision, and the suitability will vary from person to person. Some people are happy to plough through the CII study text, whilst others prefer to use additional resources such as study notes, e-learning or audios. As mentioned, we see mock papers as a vital resource for R01 to R05 revision and other resources such as calculation workbooks for R02, R03 and R04 are also very useful. You may want to try out different resources to see what suits your style of learning.
We hope that gives you some ideas but there is no getting away from it: there is a lot of work involved in passing the R0 exams, but we are here to help, so do have a look at our How to Pass Guides and the free tasters of all our R0 exam resources to see what could work for you.
