Diploma to Chartered in 10 Months: A Fast Track Strategy

At Brand Financial Training, we’re proud to support professionals on their journey to Chartered status. Recently, one of our customers, Peter Spence, a research analyst at Windsor Private Office, achieved something particularly impressive, progressing from the CII Diploma to Chartered status in just 10 months. Peter kindly shared his experience with us, and we’re pleased to pass on his key insights: what worked, what didn’t, and how the right resources helped him pass every exam on the first attempt.
This article was written in cooperation with Peter Spence and is correct as at 5 August 2025.
Here’s a breakdown of his strategy to help others considering the same path.
Plan Your Route
Peter began with a clear plan, mapping out the units he needed and the order he planned to take them. He assigned deadlines and study windows for each stage. This structured approach kept him focused on the end goal.
His exam path was carefully designed to maintain consistent progress:
- AF6 (coursework)
- Then straight into AF5
- While waiting for results, he completed AF8 (coursework)
- AF1 came last, requiring a lot of intense study near the end
- While waiting on AF1 results, he picked up the lower-level units of LP1, LP2, LP3 and FA5 to top up the necessary credits.
Focus on Efficiency
The aim was not distinctions but to pass efficiently.
Using the CII’s learning outcomes and mark allocation, he focused his time on the topics that carried the most weight. Chapters with low marks were skim read. High-yield topics got extra attention.
“Studying smart is a skill and recognising areas which need more time and others less is key to efficient and effective studying.”
Know Your Strengths Early
Before studying a module in full, he took one of the Brand Financial Training full mock exams to see where he stood. This revealed which topics he already understood and which needed attention.
“Starting with a mock exam, highlights strengths and weaknesses which provides a foundation for your study plan.”
Using the Right Resources
Throughout his journey, he relied on Brand Financial Training’s suite of resources, including:
- Mock exams for every exam module
- Calculation workbooks, especially helpful for AF1
“There are only so many questions that can be asked, the more mocks you do, the more prepared you are for all types of questions.”
While some resources came at a cost, Peter found they ultimately saved him both time and the expense of exam retakes.
High-Intensity Studying: The 20-Minute Rule
Instead of marathon sessions, he worked using the proven revision method of short, focused study bursts:
- 20 minutes of locked-in study
- Short break
- Then repeat
“This kept my focus high and avoided burnout. Quality over quantity.”
Mental Health Comes First
Peter also emphasised the importance of wellbeing.
“Health comes first. Studying intensely has side effects. If it’s too much, slow down. There are no extra qualifications for doing it quickly.”
Final Thoughts from Brand Financial Training
Every candidate’s journey is unique, but Peter’s story shows how a clear plan, efficient studying, and the right resources can dramatically speed up progress to Chartered status.
We’re proud that our materials helped him pass all modules on the first attempt saving both time and money.
Thank you to Peter for generously sharing his strategy and offering useful advice to those currently working towards Chartered status.
